Research on papal documents between international networking and digitization: New approaches to the history of writing and chanceries

Digitalisation makes research in medieval charters faster as well as more efficient and modern. A certain scepticism towards new IT based tools, however, is still to be found among historians. By intensifying the cooperation between palaeographers, diplomatists and computer scientists, this scepticism might be overcome, a cooperation may lead to an enduring and useful establishment of IT tools.

The aim of the conference is to bring together distinguished scientists in Medieval History, Historical Auxiliary Sciences and Computer Sciences (focusing mainly on Pattern Recognition) in order to discuss experiences, chances and challenges of this increasing European integration. Palaeographers and/or editors should report their experiences with these digital tools and provide an insight into their needs and expectations on computer sciences. Where might, for instance, IT based tools help to facilitate historical work or optimise its outcome?

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften

The research project Script and Signs is going to participate at the Long Night of the Sciences. The main topics of our project will be presented in a lecture about “The right hand of the pope – computerised analyses of medieval papal charters” at 8 p.m. Of course you will also be able to thoroughly acquaint yourself with our project at the available information stand and you can even try out some of the new tools that have been constructed specifically for this undertaking.

Between 6 and 12 p.m. you will have the opportunity to catch up on Script and Signs at the Orangery, situated among all the other Digital Humanities of the FAU. We are looking forward to your visit!

Further information about the Long Night of the Sciences is available here.
