Optimize stroke therapy by means of interventional perfusion imaging.

Esophagus Segmentation to Support Atrial Ablation Therapy

1. Overview

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and it increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. With atrial ablation therapy it is possible to treat AF by an ablation procedure inside the left atrium of the heart. However, the nearby esophagus can be injured during this procedure which can be the cause for fatal complications.

The aim of this project was to develop a segmentation and visualization method of the esophagus, using CT and C-arm CT data, in order to increase treatment success of atrial ablation therapy. This project was funded by Siemens AG, Healthcare Sector.

A different, more recent project about esophagus segmentation is described on this page.

2. Example

This movie shows a segmented esophagus (green) and a segmented left atrium (red).
