Electrophysiology Procedures (EP)

Motivation

Electrophysiology procedures are minimally invasive procedures that target the treatment of heart arrhythmias. Our group is closely working with industrial and clinical partners to develop new solutions to help physicians during the procedure.

Currently, our main focus is the treatment of atrial fibrillation, which is the most common arrhythmia and associated with an increased risk of stroke. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular rhythm of the left atrium.

Motion Compensation

Electrophysiology procedures are usually guided by fluorosocopic imaging. Unfortunately, the heart is not visible in such images. To overcome this problem, fluoroscopic overlay images rendered from pre-operative volumetric data, e.g., CT, MRI or C-Arm CT, provide additional guidance for physicians during these catheter ablation. As these overlay images are compromised by cardiac and respiratory motion, we are working on methods to provide motion compensation.
