Digitization of Historical Scrolls published in local newspaper
25.06.2018 - 09:20 A work of the current research project "Digitization of Fragile Historical Documents by Using 3-D X-ray Computed Tomography" has been recently published in an article in the North bavarian news(Nürnberger Nachrichten) dated on 21th June 2018. The joint project between the FAU's Pattern Recognition Lab, the Institute of Manufacturing Metrology and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Pattern Recognition and Image Processing involves the digitization of historical Chinese bamboo scrolls, which where the main media in ancient China before the invention of paper. The article features the non-invasive scan of a heavily soiled scroll and the image processing to virtually clean the scroll such that people can read the scroll without cleaning and unwrapping the fragile document. Furthermore, it provides an outlook about the digitization of historical manuscripts.
