Speech and Movement Analysis using your SMArtphone for neurological diseases

SMA² is a joint project between the University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia, and the FAU. The goal is to collect and analyze speech and motor signals from patients suffering from neurological diseases using Apkinson, our free Android smartphone application. Right now, the project focuses mainly on the evaluation of Morbus Parkinson.

Motivation

Increase therapy coverage
Patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease experience a gradual loss of their motor capabilities throughout the different disease stages, resulting in tremor, impaired movement and speech. To treat the symptoms, patients receive physiotherapy and speech therapy to preserve their skills for as long as possible. In the days or weeks between two therapy sessions however, patients usually do not practice at home, and if they do, they will not receive any feedback.
With our application, we want to encourage patients to work on their skills every day for a couple of minutes. We provide numerous speech and movement exercises and the application automatically reminds the user when it is time to practice.
Collect medical data
Providing reasonable user feedback is crucial to keep the motivation of a patient on a high level. To make use of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, we need an appropriate amount of speech and motor data. It allows our algorithms to learn how to differentiate between mild, advanced and strong symptoms of a neurological disease.
Collecting data on an everyday basis is also very interesting from a researchers point of view. We can derive knowledge about how Parkinson's Disease symptoms change with respect to severity and expression on a day-to-day level. This will help to better put therapy results into a temporal context: Did the patient's capabilities really decrease, or was this just a bad day?
