Dr.-Ing. Dieter Hahn

Alumnus of the Pattern Recognition Lab of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

My vision is to seamlessly combine multiple medical imaging techniques (fusion), to visualize the results in a suitable manner and thereby provide more information to the physicians for their diagnoses.

Research Interests

Here you can find s brief summary of my research interests and projects. The core of my research is registration and segmentation in medical imaging.

Intensity Based Image Registration

The intensity based image registration is driven by a similarity measure that takes both (or more) input images and computes a numerical value that provides information about the goodness of fit.

  • Intra-modal parametric image registration for the analyzation of tissue deformations

  • Transfer function based registration

  • Similarity measures for parametric and non-parametric registration approaches
  • Non-parametric image registration (together with Volker Daum)
  • Registration of MR and SPECT brain images for epilepsy case studies

Hybrid Image Registration

Hybrid information is generated by for instance by using features extracted from the images or segmentation results. The combination of the image intensities with the features and additional information may lead to a more robust and accurate registration result.

  • Combination of intensity with salient feature information for image registration

  • Combination of segmentation and registration

Ultrasound Image Processing

3D ultrasound imaging is increasingly used in clinical interventions. Compared to CT or MR scanners, its low costs make it attractive for the integration into a broad spectrum of clinical workflows. Although it has a good spatial resolution, the image quality tends to be worse than other imaging modalities, which makes ultrasound image processing a difficult topic.

  • Segmentation of the thyroid (together with Eva Kollorz)
  • Registration of Thyroid Datasets

Volume Rendering in Image Fusion

The visualization of the registration results is a vital part of every application related to this topic. In order to get a realtime feedback of the current state of the registration for both parametric and non-parametric approaches, the volumes are transformed and deformed on modern graphics hardware.

  • Realtime visualization of the parametric registration transform
  • Realtime visualization of volumetric deformations
