New PhD Student
10.04.2018 - 11:25

Christian Bergler joined the Pattern Recognition Lab on April 1st and is part of the group Speech Processing and Understanding (SAGI).

He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Engineering (focus on Mechanical Engineering) and his Master of Engineering in Industrial Information Technology and Automation (focus on Industrial Information Technology) both from the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden (OTH-AW).

From April 2016 until now Christian Bergler worked as a Sofware Developer (ASR, TTS and other communication software modules for simulation and training systems) at the e.sigma Technology GmbH, as well as an external PhD student of the Pattern Recognition Lab (SAGI). Now he will pursue his PhD directly at the Pattern Recognition Lab in Erlangen.

His research focuses on the dynamic adaptation of stochastic language models based on additional contextual domain knowledge within the field of Air Traffic Control (ATC). The main goal is to support the controller-pilot communication process via a robust Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations within their communication chain in order to make the air traffic more safe.

Another area of his research activities involve the analysis of underwater audio recordings of marine animals (killer whales). The main goal is to gain information about the communication process of the animals, their behavior and the social life of the orcas by analyzing the underwater field recordings (orca call detection and classification) in connection with the associated situational video recordings and behaviour descriptions of the animals provided by several researchers on site.
